Recently I wrote about the 'new' server tank. Since a few days the server is totally back in business, all services are running, as if the server was never down.

During the rebuilding of the system, I also added a feature to Herakles to backup the MySQL-databases... although out of a recovery point-of-view I still have to test a recover action of the database. I don't want to get suprised during a recover operation

I guess... my backup/recover policy is much better as an average ICT-company... I hear stories .

Within a few days I will write more about the MySQL-backup possibilities...

My brother Kees and his girlfriend are going to travel around the world the next 12 months.

And of course they want to inform friends and family. A few years ago they went to New-Zealand and I set up an very easy PHP-website (yes it was programmed very quick and very dirty)

But know I want a site which is easy to maintain (for me and them while they are travelling)

So I set up CMS Mambo in combination with Gallery 2.

Last Monday, I was monitoring my /var/log/maillog on the server morpheus. And I saw a lot of rejected e-mail scrolling by.

After about 10 minutes it stopped.

And in the mailgraph I saw an average of about 2 messages per second... I really do not like spam people



So you understand I am very happy with SpamHaus.

As I wrote before Tank is death. And since yesterday he is back alive (although... not fully functional, but it is a matter of time).

Within the next few days I will install all the required software:

DNS Server

Mailserver

Herakles retention dump

So hopefully it will function for the next few months.

The funniest thing is that the hardware I use know is the old hardware of Morpheus

In my fight against spam... I installed SpamAssassin. .



A user can decide to use it or not by editing his dot-forward file in his/her $HOME.

Yesterday I've been to NedZone. NedZone is a company in Steenbergen who provides Rackspace and connectivity.

Marcel, one of the engineers, showed me the new data centre of them:

Marcel also told me that they are quite open-source minded, they do have a few Windows-servers... but that is because of certain functionality. Mostly they use CentOS en some FreeBSD stuff.

So I decided to update the GPG-plugin... so I will not be vulnerable any more

On friday 29th of june, my server tank.adslweb.net died.



I guess the mainboard of the computer died... so I have to find a solution, because at this moment no backups are available. I have two options:

Buy new hardware;

Use the old hardware of morpheus.

I still do not know what to do and keep fingers crossed that everything stays online
